Qantas axes flights from Cairns
THE Cairns tourism industry has received a major blow with Qantas Group axeing flights from Tokyo to Cairns by half and Jetstar axing its Cairns to Nagoya route from December.
The changes will also see Qantas' pilot base in Cairns closed with about 40 Cairns-based pilots moving to Sydney or other bases.
Qantas chief executive officer Geoff Dixon said there would also be a "small number" of job losses in Cairns and Japan.
The Cairns cabin crew base would remain to service domestic operations.
The shakeup is part of wider changes to international flights which will also see Jetstar replace Qantas on many routes.
The route changes will see Jetstar fly from the Gold Coast to Tokyo five times a week.
It leaves the group flying about 11,500 seats between Japan and Queensland a week.
